Overview

EACL 2027 invites the submission of long and short papers featuring

substantial, original, and unpublished research on Natural Language

Processing. EACL 2027 has a goal of curating a diverse technical
program. In

addition to traditional research results, papers may contribute negative

findings, survey an area, announce the creation of a new resource, argue
a

position, report novel linguistic insights derived using existing

computational techniques, and reproduce (or fail to reproduce) previous

results. We also introduce the Special Theme "The Human in Language",
which we

hope will stimulate exciting research contributions.

As in recent years, some of the presentations at the conference will be
of

papers accepted by the Transactions of the ACL (TACL) and the
Computational

Linguistics (CL) journals.

Submission information

EACL 2027 will use ACL Rolling Review (ARR) as its reviewing system, but
final

decisions will be made by the conference. Both the submission of
articles for

review and the commitment of reviewed articles to the conference will be

handled via the OpenReview platform, in a two-step process:

• Authors submit articles to ARR, where submissions receive reviews and

  meta-reviews from ARR reviewers and action editors.

• Authors commit their reviewed articles to a publication venue (e.g.
  EACL

  2027), where Senior Area Chairs and Program Chairs make acceptance
  decisions

  from the ARR reviews and meta-reviews.

Papers must be submitted, at the latest, by the ARR 2026 August cycle.
Papers

that have received reviews and a meta-review from ARR (whether from the
ARR

2026 August cycle or an earlier ARR cycle) may be committed to EACL via
the

commitment link. Dual submissions are not allowed; please check the ARR
Call

for Papers for details.

The reviewing process will continue to be double-blind. Reviewers will
not see

authors, nor will authors see reviewers, and reviews on ARR will not be
made

publicly visible. However, authors will be given the option through ARR
to

make their anonymized submitted articles publicly visible. Following the
ACL

and ARR policies, there is no anonymity period requirement.

During the commitment phase, it is not allowed to modify the author list

(addition/deletion of authors is not allowed); however, modification of
author

order is possible.

Important change: For this cycle, author response and author-reviewer

discussion are two separate stages. In the first (14-19 September 2026),

authors engage in any necessary discussion and reviewers finalise their

Special Theme: The Human in Language

Natural language processing has historically been grounded in the
scientific

study of human language. Linguistics, psycholinguistics, cognitive
science,

sociolinguistics, and related disciplines have shaped many of the core

concepts underlying NLP, including syntax, semantics, discourse,
pragmatics,

language acquisition, and communication. Yet, as modern NLP increasingly

shifts toward large-scale end-to-end learning and benchmark-driven
evaluation,

the connection between language technologies and the broader scientific

understanding of human language is often becoming less explicit.

The EACL 2027 special theme, "The Human in Language", invites papers
that

explore how the human sciences of language can inform and shape NLP
research

across the full research cycle: model development, representation
learning,

data collection and annotation, evaluation, interpretability,
interaction, and

deployment. We also welcome work that uses NLP methods and contemporary

language models to advance the scientific study of language, cognition,

communication, and the brain, while the central focus of the track
remains on

strengthening the role of the language sciences as a source of
scientific

grounding, methodological guidance, and conceptual insight for NLP
itself.

Relevant topics include, but are not limited to:

• Linguistically informed NLP - incorporating linguistic structure,

  compositionality, pragmatics, discourse, multilinguality, or theories
  of

  meaning into model architectures, representations, prompting
  strategies, or

  training objectives.

• Human-centered evaluation and annotation - evaluation methodologies
  grounded

  in human communication and cognition; human-informed task design;
  annotation

  frameworks derived from linguistic or psycholinguistic theory;
  communicative

  grounding; and evaluation beyond benchmark-centric notions of
  performance.

• Language models and the scientific study of language - using NLP
  models as

  tools for studying linguistic phenomena, language acquisition,

  psycholinguistics, discourse, communication, and social interaction;
  and

  understanding where current models align with or diverge from human
  language

  behavior.

• Language, the brain, and neuroscience - computational models of
  language

  processing in the brain; neural and behavioral alignment studies;
  multimodal

  studies of language understanding; and NLP methods for studying
  cognition and

  communication in naturalistic settings.

• Language, interaction, and society - conversational alignment,
  communication

  in social contexts, language and identity, language and emotion,
  behavioral

  modeling through language, and the role of language technologies in

  human-centered applications.

• Foundations of language and meaning - representation of meaning in
  humans and

  machines; pragmatics, reference, grounding, ambiguity, context
  dependence,

  and philosophical perspectives on language and communication.

Long Papers

Long paper submissions must describe substantial, original, completed
and

unpublished work. Long papers may consist of up to 8 pages of content,
plus

unlimited pages for references and appendices. Upon acceptance, long
papers

will be given one additional page of content (i.e. up to 9 pages) in the

proceedings so that reviewers' comments can be taken into account.

Short Papers

Short paper submissions must describe original and unpublished work. A
short

paper is not a shortened long paper; instead, short papers should have a
point

that can be made in a few pages. Short papers may consist of up to 4
pages of

content, plus unlimited references and appendices. Upon acceptance,
short

papers will be given one additional page of content (i.e. up to 5 pages)
in the

proceedings so that reviewers' comments can be taken into account.

Presentation at the Conference

All accepted papers must be presented at the conference to appear in the

proceedings. The conference will include both in-person and virtual

presentation options. Papers without at least one presenting author
registered

by the early registration deadline may be subject to rejection. Long and
short

papers will be presented orally or as posters, as determined by the
program

committee. While short papers will be distinguished from long papers in
the

proceedings, there will be no distinction in the proceedings between
papers

presented orally and papers presented as posters.

Paper Integrity Policies at EACL

There is growing concern in our community regarding unethical paper

submissions that overwhelm community resources, including but not
limited to

thinly sliced contributions, submissions with hallucinated citations,
and

entirely AI-generated papers (AI writing assistance is permitted). EACL
will

take action against such submissions, as well as submissions that
violate the

ACL Policy on Publication Ethics. Such submissions may be desk rejected,
and

all authors involved may be ineligible to commit their paper(s) to EACL
2027

and EACL 2028. Commitment to other *CL conferences during this period
might

also be forbidden.

Mandatory Reviewing Workload

All authors are expected to sign up to review, or serve as an Area Chair
or

Senior Area Chair, with assignments subsequently based on
qualifications. After

submission, all authors must complete the author registration form by 5
August

2026 EoD AoE. If you receive assignments, reviews must be completed by 7

September, and meta-reviews by 2 October. In case of emergencies, the
chairs

should be warned via the emergency declaration form. Exemptions to this
policy

are detailed in the ARR Author Reviewer Exemption Policy page.

Highly irresponsible reviewers may be ineligible to (re-)submit or
commit their

work during the next ARR cycle. Submitting authors should (a) make sure
all

other authors are aware of this policy, and (b) check that everybody on
their

team(s) submits their (meta-)reviews on time and in accordance with the

AI Reviewing Experiment (opt-in)

The Program Committee plans to run an opt-in AI Reviewing Experiment to
collect

feedback from authors on the utility of AI Reviewers in the review
process. The

AI reviews for opted-in submissions will not inform any part of the
conference

decision process. The experiment will run under IRB approval, using
open-weights

models on in-house compute resources, or closed models that guarantee
zero-data

retention.

requirements, including instructions for two-way anonymized review;
authorship;

citation and comparison; the multiple submission, resubmission and
withdrawal
